THIS year’s Jersey Eisteddfod Young Actor of the Year was won by Florence Byrne, who overcame strong competition to claim the title.

The JCG student has been performing on stage since a very young age, having first entered the Eisteddfod when she was in Year 1.

Now, aged 16 and in Year 12, is already looking ahead to retaining her title next year.

She said: “Winning Young Actor of the Year felt amazing. The people with me were all in my age category and we are all friends, so there were no hard feelings. We always wish each other good luck before going on stage and they were all really happy for me.

“I hope to do it again next year- if I am not overloaded with school work and revision.”

Florence is currently studying art, biology and English Literature at A-Level.

But she said her passion is drama having won several acting prizes over the years before being crowned Young Actor of the Year.

“I had to submit three pieces for the Young Actors category, and get at least one gold. Eight of us were in the final, in the 13-17 age bracket,” she said.

“I have been doing this since I was in Year 1. I have won a few categories before including versed speaking and Shakespeare, but this is my first time winning Young Actor of the Year. I have also entered the music Eisteddfod, but I love drama.”

She has also been rehearsing for LAMDA exams – the drama equivalent of music grading – and is set to take her Grade 8 exam later this month.

Florence also recently placed second in the Calibre Audio Company poetry contest- a national competition. She entered a poem called The Colour of Pink, which scored second out of all UK entries.

“I love writing and reciting poetry, I’ve been doing it since Year 5 and it all helped me build up to the acting,” she added.
